THE story of a Victorian writer is to be brought to life in Weardale. Mrs Beeton, My Sister tells the story of the fascinating story of the Victorian domestic goddess through the eyes of her endearing sister Bessie.

The story follows the eldest of 21 children and brought up in the Grandstand at Epsom Racecourse, Isabella Beeton fell for a publisher called Sam Beeton and joined his rackety life in journalism, culminating in her world-famous ‘Book of Household Management’ in 1861.

The book became a classic and offered practical information on everything the ‘mistress of the house’ would need to know to run a Victorian household. Publishing triumphs were matched by private disasters and financial problems. Her family did not approve of her life, sister Bessie is still not so sure of it.

Written and performed by award-winning playwright Alison Neil and directed by David Collison. Since 1988 Mrs Neil has created nine one-woman plays, all based on the interesting lives of real women from history.

Mrs Neil’s shows have been adapted as BBC Radio 4 afternoon plays.

The one-hour show is then followed by a relaxed Question and Answer session with Alison.
