Staff at a pre-school in Llanymynech have been celebrating after being awarded an ‘outstanding’ mark in its most recent Ofsted inspection.

Border Pre-School had already received the outstanding mark once before, and was inspected again under the new Ofsted framework which was introduced in September.

The inspector commented on the quality of teaching as well as the performance and behaviour of the children who attend the pre-school.

Setting leader, Sandra Hayward, said it is her proudest moment since being in the job.

“It’s probably the highlight of both mine and my deputy’s 27-year career really,” she said.

“To have achieved outstanding once was something, but to do it again is fantastic – we’ll have to go for the hat-trick now.

“There is a new Ofsted inspection framework, and it scrutinises the quality of the teaching as opposed to looking over lots of paperwork.

“They observe staff working with the children to see what the quality of teaching is like and I think that’s a step in the right direction.

“I was pleased to see it change and it is intense; there were lots of questions about our group and what our plans are for the future, but it was really positive.”

Comments from the inspector highlighted the “exceptionally high quality and inspirational” teaching, and the high expectations held for each child.

The report also described the children as happy and motivated learners who show a high level of respect for others.

Sandra said her job, as well as the jobs of her fellow staff members, is made easier because going to work can be so enjoyable.

She said: “This is a job that you couldn’t do unless you enjoyed it.

“It’s not particularly high-paid, but it is a labour of love.

“It’s great working with pre-school children, and that’s one thing the Ofsted inspector commented on – he said he could tell we are passionate about what we do with the children.

“It’s a real passion for the job and also a passion for understanding the importance of learning during the early years of life.”
