A MAN who once benefitted from a children and families' Christmas toy appeal has completed a mammoth challenge to give back to the cause that helped him.

Wayne McCartney, of Your Gym on Crosby Street, Darlington, challenged himself to new fitness heights in aid of the Salvation Army's Christmas Toy Appeal.

On Sunday, December 8, the personal trainer set off from Your Gym and ran a total of 24 miles to Roseberry Topping, near Great Ayton.

Once there, Mr McCartney then tackled the 1,050 feet incline to its summit in the final leg of his challenge, stopping at the top to admire the view and reflect on those who may be worse-off at Christmas time.

With a current total of around £400, Mr McCartney's fundraiser will enable the Salvation Army to buy toys for disadvantaged youngsters in the area, who otherwise may not have anything to open on Christmas day.

Mr McCartney said his inspiration for the challenge came from his own experiences of poverty around this festive time.

He said: "It was tough growing up struggling - it was a battle when it came to food and we experienced a lot hardship.

"As a kid you don’t really think that your family is struggling as we were loved, only less financially fortunate.

"There were seven of us and I remember a black bag full of gifts arriving at the house for us all from The Salvation Army.

"I'll always remember the toys coming to our house and it felt like Christmas coming early. We were all excited.

"The older siblings were all sat on the stairs trying to peak in and were very excited – it was something to look forward to.

"As a child waking up with a present, that made me smile for the day. It made me feel grateful, lucky, with my family being there, having good food and the presents. Christmas was complete."

As well as monetary donations, Mr McCartney is also collecting donations of toys, books and treats to give to the appeal.

Those who wish to donate can bring gifts to Your Gym, 73 Crosby Street, Darlington, or to other collection points including the Salvation Army headquarters, on Thompson Street East, between 10am and 12pm Monday to Saturday, or to Sainsburys on Victoria Road, Footprints in Skinnergate, Asda on Whinfield Road and North Road Morrisons.

Generous members of the public have until December 14 to give to the appeal, before toys are sorted ready to give to families.

Mr McCartney is still collecting funds for his challenge, with a target of raising £1,000 for the Salvation Army.
