A 32-YEAR-OLD man who tried to take his own life after depression "robbed him of his character" is set to go back into the ring months after taking part in a charity boxing match.

Karl Jones of Pensbury Street, Darlington, turned to boxing following an attempt to take his own life in August last year.

Mr Jones, a sign maker and boxing fan, previously spoke of his disbelief when he received a personal video message from Tyson Fury, wishing him the best of luck, before a charity boxing match in April.

But several months on, Mr Jones is set to take part in a championship boxing event with sponsorship from a Darlington-based letting agent.

Darlington and Stockton Times:

Ben Quaintrell, the founder of My Property Box, said he had been "moved " by Mr Jones' battle against mental health.

He said: "I was moved by Karl’s determination to overcome his depression which took him to the very brink and how, through boxing and professional support, he is turning his life around.

“I’m thrilled to support Karl financially in his pursuit of boxing, but I’m also determined to make a positive contribution to improve mental wellbeing.”

Inspired by Mr Jones, Mr Quaintrell said he was now involving his team in a mental health awareness course to help staff spot the early signs of "mental distress".

He said: "This will allow our staff to spot the early signs of mental distress among work colleagues, friends and family – allowing them to seek the necessary help and support long before they reach the lonely position that Karl found himself in.

“Karl has made a positive change to his life through sport and I hope his example will inspire others to talk about mental health problems openly and honestly.”

The boxing event X-Plosive 8 will take place at The Hub at Teesside University in Middlesbrough on Saturday, November 16.
