THE world of cycling truly descends this week. Spectator was under the illusion the UCI Road World Championships would be another bike race pretty much along the lines of the Tour de Yorkshire but bigger obviously and with more languages. But of course it's huge. The world's greatest cyclists will be eating up the roads in a week of races to find the globes elite.

And we will all get the chance to watch. It's only the third time the race has been held in Britain, so it is a real feather in our caps pretty much because of all the hard work put in since the Grand Depart in 2014 and the massive support for the every more popular Tour de Yorkshire.

And even though there are issues; the roads are closed, some of them get a whole new surface while others are neglected, and we have to spend some money it's a marker of the growing importance and appreciation of the land and people we all want to see acknowledged around the world.

Northallerton features largely with the Men Elite Individual Time Trial on Wednesday September 25 which will see the cyclists piling through the County town before going through Bedale, Masham and onto Harrogate which is the heart of the whole event. Richmond is star of the show on September 26 and the Dales feature largely.

Spectator has to say after last weeks moan about road signs being abandoned following work on the route, the county council was in the process of clearing them making way for informative signs on road closures. And the rebranding of one of their 18 tonne gritters in UCI colours to be part of the championships first publicity caravan on September 28 and 29 is to be applauded, featuring the motto Salt of the Earth, now there's a message to the world.
