SHOWING Herdwick sheep for the first time at her local mart saw 21 year-old Milly Eaton take the title at Skipton mart's annual native and rare breeds showcase.

She won with her first prize April 2017 born two shear ram by a Gatesgarth tup from South Lakeland's Anthony Hartley. Out of a Screeside dam, he sold for the day's top price of 350gns to well-known Herdwick breeders, Ian and Angela Grisedale of Crooklands, Kendal.

Milly started with Herdwicks when given two as a 17th birthday present, building up her flock to ten at its peak. She is now into her fourth year of veterinary studies at Liverpool University. She had a pen of four Herdwick at the fixture, selling for a combined total of £829.50.

A first prize-winning Coloured Ryeland ram, the only entry from Dr Rebecca Clavell-Bate’s Chocolatebox flock in Colne that was reserve champion. Chocolatebox Zippy, made 150gns when sold to fellow Coloured Ryeland breeders BW&AM Duffin, of Grange-over-Sands.
