THIS year's Kirkby Fleetham Feast got underway despite dozens of shows across North Yorkshire being cancelled due to bad weather.

On Saturday, August 10, people from across the country turned out to the village, after event organisers spent months in the planning.

Despite spells of heavy showers and blustery winds throughout the day, football on the green, quoits at the Black Horse Inn, a fun run around village lanes and a dog show, were just some of the events that took place.

The show had been opened by children at Kirkby Fleetham Primary School, who conducted a demonstration march around the arena shouting "how good there school" is.

Fun run organiser and show secretary Kay Kelly said: "It is one of the aims of the organisation to keep rural village traditions alive and provide events that all ages of the community can participate in.

"Activities under cover during Feast Week were indoor bowls in the newly refurbished village hall and a challenging quiz set by Dave Tarleton Hodgson which was held in the marquee.

"Again, there was a record turnout for this evening."

Competitors in this year's show activities said they hoped a longer run of 5k and 10k races could be organised in the future.

A spokesperson for the event said: "This year was well supported despite the weather predictions, and it continues to grow, develop and change.

"It is thanks to all its committee members, volunteers and participants that it is able to do so and enrich the community."
