RISHI SUNAK, MP for Richmond since 2015, has been appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury during Boris Johnson's full-scale reshaping of Theresa May's government on his first day as Prime Minister.
The freshly-anointed prime minister sacked detractors, squeezed out leadership rival Jeremy Hunt and brought in a team of prominent Brexiteers.
Along with resignations, it means more than half of his predecessor's cabinet are no longer in their roles.
The Chief Secretary to the Treasury is the third most senior ministerial position in HM Treasury, after the First Lord of the Treasury and the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Promotion to the role represents a huge promotion for Mr Sunak, from his previous role as a junior minister in the department for housing, local government and communities.
