A TEAM of keen knitters have embarked on a 24 hour knit-athon to help raise vital funds to buy a young girl a specialist wheelchair.

Chloe Smith suffered serious complications when she was diagnosed with meningitis when she was just three months old which resulted in her having her foot and hand amputated.

The nine-year-old has never let her medical problems take the smile from her face but her mother said the specialist wheelchair would be 'amazing' to help her daughter get about on her own.

The knitters hard at work

The knit-athon is just the latest fundraising project to help to raise the £7,000 the family needs to buy the wheelchair.

Her mother Hayley said: "Chloe has a prosthetic limb with unicorns on and she loves to run and jump and ride her adapted bike but because of her difficulties she falls every few steps and tires very easily and frequently needs to use a wheelchair.

"However because she can’t propel herself in a chair she has to be pushed everywhere which is restrictive for her, especially as she gets older. She has seen a lightweight all terrain chair with a motorised attachment that would give her the freedom she needs and hopes we can raise money for it."
