A COUPLE who met as teenagers are celebrating their 65th anniversary today.

Des and Betty Thirtle first met in Amble, Northumberland, and went to a dance together on their first date aged 14 and 15.

The pair, now aged 87 and 88, were married in 1954 in Northumberland before moving to Darlington around 40 years ago.

Mr and Mrs Thirtle, who have always shared a love for dancing, have six daughters, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

One of their daughters, Debra Barley, said: "My father still runs the tea dance at the dolphin centre.

"He adores all his children and grandchildren. He said the best thing he ever did was have a big family.

"They have been sweethearts all through their marriage.

"Congratulations mam and dad on your 65th wedding anniversary from your six daughters and all the family."

The couple will be celebrating their Blue Sapphire today with their family.
