A WOMAN who suffered serious injuries when she fell onto rocks at a beauty spot was airlifted to hospital for treatment.

Volunteer members of Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team (CMRT) were called out at 2pm on Saturday afternoon after the 21-year-old from Durham was injured whilst climbing at the Wainstones on the North York Moors above Stokesley.

A CMRT spokesman said: "The team deployed in their Landrover ambulances to the scene and managed to drive across fields to within around 200 metres from the crag along with a paramedic from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

"The lady was treated at the scene by team personnel, including a doctor, and the ambulance paramedic.

"They were then assisted by the medical staff from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance that had arrived on scene soon after us.

"Once stabilised the lady was carried on a mountain rescue stretcher by the team 100 metres to the waiting helicopter for the short flight to James Cook University Hospital.

"Eighteen team members were involved in the incident that lasted two hours."
