HUNDREDS of pounds has been raised from a session of afternoon tea in commemoration of the anniversary of D-Day.

Volunteers at The Booth Hall, or Booth Memorial Institute, in Catterick Village, held the afternoon tea event on Saturday, June 8.

Dozens of people gathered for a selection of homemade cakes, tea and coffee, before a raffle was held in aid of The Royal British Legion, which raised around £130.

A further £300 was raised, throughout the day, to go towards the hall's ongoing renovations and refurbishment works.

The village hall was built in 1898, before it was donated to the people of the village in tribute to Charles William Booth.

In 2015, work commenced on a major renovation of the village hall after a group of residents set up the 'Friends of Booth Hall' campaign.

It was established that around £150,000 would be needed to make major repairs to the more than 100-year-old hall's roof, windows and the overall structure.

At the time, chair of the friends group, Margaret Tickner, said: "Thanks to a lot of hard work by the Friends of the Booth Hall, plus donations from Catterick Village Parish Council, Richmondshire District Council Community Opportunity Fund and The Jack Brunton Fund we now have enough money to start on Stage one of the first phase of the renovation works."

The major renovation work was completed towards the end of last year, leaving just a few projects left to be completed.
