A CELEBRATION of the life of an MP is expected to bring fun, laughter and music this weekend.

The Great Get Together will take place in South Park on Sunday between 12pm and 4pm to honour Jo Cox, who was murdered in her West Yorkshire constituency in 2016.

Darlington and Stockton Times:

The Great Get Together is run annually by the Jo Cox Foundation. The theme of this year’s events will be ‘Let’s Get Back Together’. It’s a chance for people across the country to reconnect with old friends, neighbours and family members and to meet others in their communities who they may not already know.

More in Common Darlington have organised the event. Chair Peter Greenwood said: "MIC Darlington’s emphasis this year, with our partner, Youth Focus North East led by its development officer Helen Kennedy, has been on bringing people from different backgrounds together to talk and get to know each other."

Jenny Chapman MP said: “I am really looking forward to Darlington’s Great Get Together this month. It’s one of the thousands of Great Get Together events taking place across the country to honour the memory and legacy of Jo Cox.

"I know the Darlington event will be a reminder of the strength and diversity of our community and an opportunity for us to see that while we have our differences, we have far more in common than that which divides us.”

Kim Leadbeater, Jo Cox’s sister and ambassador for the Jo Cox Foundation, said: “We are going through turbulent times politically and there’s a lot of attention at the moment on the things that divide opinion, but for me that’s no reason not to try to do something positive that can help bring communities together."
