POLICE were called to a rare incident involving a straw bale in Barnard Castle last week.

A farmer was transporting 36 bales and was driving around the Market Cross at about 12.30pm on Wednesday, June 5, when one bale rolled off and hit the back of the tractor.

No one was injured in the incident and officers were able to identify the farmer thanks to help from the community and have since issued him with a £100 fixed penalty notice for the offence of using a trailer with a load which was insecure and likely to cause danger.

The man was also given safety advice about how to secure bales.

PC Dave Williamson said: “The farmer has been identified due to the information provided by members of the public and we would like to thank those members of the public for their information.

“This is a timely reminder to all users of motor vehicles and in particular those using agricultural vehicles to ensure vehicles, trailers and loads are secure.”

Inspector Ed Turner, of Barnard Castle and Crook Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “This was a rare and isolated incident.

“Thankfully no one was injured but this could have been more serious and it’s a reminder to ensure vehicles are correct and safe.”
