A FAMILY event saw hundreds of people visit a historic castle for a day of farming fun.

More than 900 people visited Raby Castle at Staindrop, County Durham, for their LEAF open farm Sunday, on June 9.

The free event was part of the LEAF movement which organises events throughout the year to help, inform, educate and celebrate the work that goes into protecting the environment and agriculture.

Families were able to see farm machinery at a display which included tractors from Hamsterley Vintage Tractor Club alongside sprayers and ploughs.

The day also saw children learn about crops, forestry and livestock.

They were given the chance to study the estate's animals and took part in talks to learn about deer on site.

A spokesperson from Raby Estates said: "It was our first year doing this event but we received a brilliant response and hope to continue its success the following year."

Raby castle is set to host a children’s wildlife walk on Saturday, June 22.
