GOOD genes and plenty of exercise – that's the secret to a long life according to May Hardy who celebrated her 100th birthday earlier this week.

Family and friends of May gathered for a special celebration at Abbeyfield independent residential home in Darlington.

The Mayor of Darlington Veronica Copeland was also in attendance.

May, nee Prior, was born on May 8, 1919 and has been a devout parishioner at St Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church in Darlington for most of her life.

She attended St. Augustine’s Primary School then the Immaculate Conception School. During the war she was a Comptometer Operator at Pease & Partners in Darlington.

In 1948, May married Jim Hardy. They had two daughters, Mary and Teres, two sons-in-law, four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Kath MacColl, general manager at Abbeyfield, said: "May’s birthday had been a great occasion for all of May’s extended family and the residents and friends of Abbeyfield.

“May’s a much loved resident of Abbeyfield and there was so much warmth and happiness in the room for her."
