HUNDREDS of soldiers have taken part in an endurance challenge to complete a race across North Yorkshire from dawn until dusk.

York's 2nd Signal Regiment, based at the city's Imphal Barracks, started the Race The Sun competition at 5am on Thursday, May 2 at the barracks.

The race included a 600m run to the River Ouse, 6km kayak, half marathon, 900m open water swim, concluded with a 3km stretcher race.

The event, named as such because it traditionally takes place from sunrise to sunset, saw 28 teams take part in cycling, paddling, running, marching and swimming legs in a relay format.

The 2nd Signal Regiment took charge of facilitation, with units as varied as Army Foundation College Harrogate and 4th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland entering squads.

The event tested the team spirit, physical robustness, determination, teamwork and navigation skills of troops, with members of the public encouraged the cheer competitors on if they caught a glimpse of the action.

Teams could enter a maximum of 25 competitors, with all those who took part gathering to attend a prize giving ceremony after all of the events had been completed.
