TALENTED school footballers have won places at a major tournament in Middlesbrough.

Five Year 10 pupils from Richmond School and Sixth Form College managed to get through selection trials and into the Northern Counties Tournament.

Ben Dale, Harris Mcfarlane, Matty Callender, Max Booth and Sam Connolly each secured positions in the North Yorkshire squad.

The will play at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium.

Ben Dale team captain of the Richmond School squad said: “It is a privilege to be selected from the trial, with over 90 players attending.

“I’m determined to work hard in the upcoming games to be selected for the County squad into the season.”

The Richmond students had previously won the Richmondshire and Hambleton area’s seven-a-side cup final.

Jonathan Kellett PE teacher at Richmond School and Sixth Form College said: “The students have shone in their games for the school and the area, consistently demonstrating great determination, strength and the right attitude to succeed.

“This inherent team cohesiveness and understanding will be a great advantage when playing for the County team.

“They have made great strides in improving their game and it is a huge, standout achievement that the County has selected five of our students to compete at such a high level.

“The School has an enviable track record for producing County-standard footballers and we are incredibly proud that our students will once again be representing North Yorkshire school sport.”

The tournament is expected to take place within the next few months.
