NORTH-EAST households spend an average of £1,144 each year on alcohol, cigarettes and gambling.
According to a study using data from the Office of National Statistics, in 2018 households in the region spent around £842 on alcohol, £182 on cigarettes and £120 on gambling.
These figures showed the North-East spent 11 per cent more on cigarettes, alcohol and gambling than the average UK household that year, and spent 20 per cent more on these vices in 2018 than they did in 2017.
By category, the region spent an additional 11 per cent on alcohol, 13 per cent on cigarettes and 229 per cent on gambling.
The study was put together by consumer research company NimbleFins.
