A LARGE comprehensive school in a County Durham town will be closed today due to a gas leak.

Only three days after pupils returned following the Easter break, Bishop Barrington School, in Bishop Auckland, remained closed for the day.

The school’s social message site confirmed the Thursday closure, owing to the overnight leak.

An announcement, also made on a recorded message on the school phone line, described it as, “a major gas leak.”

But the Facebook message also stated that the Woodhouse Lane school’s sports hall will be open, as normal, for scheduled classes and other activities this evening.

It also stated that the Year 11 photography exam, which was to have taken place today, will be rescheduled and students will be informed of the newly arranged date.

Parents were asked to seek further news on updates on the school Facebook page and its website.
