A POPULAR and locally-built steam locomotive is to make a return visit to a North Yorkshire heritage railway.

Following a successful weekend of service on the Wensleydale Railway in February, the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust’s express engine Tornado will pay a further visit to the Wensleydale Railway next month.

During its first ever visit Tornado travelled along the 22 mile of track twice a day; it also hauled a romantic Valentine’s Day afternoon tea service. Among the countless photographs taken was one alongside the RAF’s workhorse aircraft of the same name that retired from service after 40 years. This picture featured in both the local and national press.

For its stay in the Dales which runs from Saturday, May 18 to Tuesday, June 4, in addition to regular runs, Tornado will make the first-ever non-stop run by a steam engine along the complete length of Wensleydale Railway since it re-opened to passenger traffic in 2003.

Beginning at Leeming Bar, the Whirlwind Express will travel to Northallerton West, then straight to Redmire, returning to Leeming Bar, covering more than 44 miles of track. Steam fans have also taken-up the opportunity of getting up close and personal with a two-hour evening photo shoot at Scruton Station which has already sold out.

Built in 2008 at Darlington, the magnificent steam locomotive was designed specifically to haul special main line trains. It was built to a traditional design but incorporates modern developments to improve performance.

During the last ten years Tornado has demonstrated spectacular results, including reaching 100mph on the East Coast main line.

As the visit will prove very popular with steam fans and the general public, the railway will operate advanced booking facilities on its website.

The non-stop express will begin at 6.30pm at Leeming Bar on Friday, May 31. The operation will coincide with other events such as an afternoon tea and the WensleyAle Festival, held annually at Redmire Station. It is also anticipated that other steam services will operate over the summer.
