STUDENTS from one school have clinched a haul of medals in national and regional sports competitions.

Carmel College sixth former India Pentland, representing Durham, won the senior girls' race at the English Schools Cross Country Championships, despite being a year young.

She beat off competition from more than 300 runners on a wet and muddy course at Temple Newsam in Leeds.

Year 7 pupil Alex Boyer recently won the under-12 British Schools Modern Biathlon championships at Crystal Palace in London.

And year 12 student Rebecca Butterfield competed at the British Schools judo competition in Sheffield and won a bronze medal in the year 12/13 age group.

Year 9 pupil, Darcey Garbutt won the North East Counties indoor athletics pentathlon championships, competing for Gateshead Harriers. She took part in hurdles, shot put, long jump, high jump and the 800m run.

PE teacher Simon Hannaford said “Carmel College had two national schools’ champions crowned on the same day.

"I guess that doesn’t happen very often.
