A PAIR of gardening brothers have finally hung up their gloves and secateurs after decades of vegetable showings across North Yorkshire.
Catterick Garrison brothers, Derrick Robinson, 79, and Brian Robinson, 83, have more than 100 trophies to their name, and have built themselves quite the reputation for growing all kinds of vegetables, since their mid-teens.
Their speciality vegetables included perfectly shaped leeks, tomatoes and cucumbers.
The brothers, whose passion for vegetable growing stemmed from their mother’s “advanced” gardening skills, said they felt that now was time to call it a day.
Derrick Robinson said: “My brother and I started showing together, we were very successful at vegetable growing.
“We showed at Scorton, Leyburn, Reeth, Patley Bridge, Stokesley, Northallerton and Richmond.
“We decided to stop showing last year, but we were asked if we could help by entering a couple more.”
The brothers attended their last show in Muker, Richmondshire, where they won one of their biggest trophy cups to date.
Vegetable showing has a long and proud history across North Yorkshire.
Events such as the Egton Gooseberry Show, which is more than 200-years-old, have continued the tradition to the present day.
