A TEESSIDE man has appeared in court in connection with a robbery at a jewellers in Northallerton.

Victor Okumu, 38, of Queen Street, Lazenby, has been charged with robbing Bradley's Jewellers in the town on March 11.

Mr Okumu was arrested in Fareham, Hampshire, on March 16 and appeared at York Magistrates' Court this week.

The case was then sent to be heard at the Crown Court.

Mr Okumu is now due to appear at York Crown Court on April 15.

Following the robbery last Monday, North Yorkshire Police issued a public appeal for sightings of a man in a crash helmet and a boiler suit.

Police said that the suspect made off with a 'large amount' of jewellery and residents were urged to check in their gardens for any items of jewellery that may have been discarded by the robber.

It is believed he made off on a bicycle.

Bradley's Jewellers has two shops in Northallerton; one on the high street and one on Market Row, also known as Barkers Parade.

The robbery happened at the Market Row branch around 10am.
