THE company behind a major refurbishment of a city centre shopping centre have announced new venues set to open this spring – but have not set a date for the opening of the delayed cinema.

The Riverwalk, on the site of the former Gates shopping centre in Durham, is undergoing a £30m redevelopment, which will see a number of new restaurants in the city.

The complex, on the banks of the River Wear, will also include a six-screen Odeon cinema, which is currently being fitted.

It was expected to open last year but a spokesperson for the development confirmed it still does not have an opening date.

The Riverwalk is opening a food hall next to its cinema

The latest venues to confirm their opening are Log Fire Pizza Co, an Italian street food restaurant, an Irish bar Delaney’s Donkey.

Nick Berry, partner at Clearbell Capital, which owns the site, said: “As the construction programme is nearing completion, and Odeon is making progress on the fit out of its six-screen cinema, we are pleased to welcome these exciting new restaurants to The Riverwalk.

“This development is about bringing a new energy to this part of the city, with a vibrant mix of restaurants, cafes and bars, to complement the cinema and bowling lanes.

“These two new brands are unique offerings as up and coming local operators, who we are proud to welcome alongside the national brands, giving visitors and residents more choice and more reasons to stay in the city.”

The Riverwalk has also announced plans for a “street food market hall”, including a number of kiosks and mobile units, which will be located next to the cinema.

Craig Shelmerdine, from Log Fire Pizza, said: “We are thrilled to be opening our first restaurant in the heart of Durham. The Riverwalk is set to be an exciting new venture for us and we’re proud to be a part of this.”

Andy Maher, of Delaney Donkey’s added: “We are delighted to be debuting at The Riverwalk, Durham. We believe we are bringing something truly unique to the city, and in a spectacular location right on the river front. We are looking forward to welcoming our first guests soon.”

The new venues will open alongside Turtle Bay and Cosy Club in the Riverwalk’s promenade.
