THE couple behind the award-winning Rascills restaurant are set to open their new venue this spring.

Richard and Lindsey Johns officially closed Rascills in Raskelf last month after struggling to make the restaurant a viable business.

They are now set to open the Hovingham Inn, in Hovingham between Malton and Helmsley, in May.

The pub, currently known as the Malt Shovel is undergoing a full renovation programme and once complete, it will reopen under the new name.

Previously owned by a national pubco, The Hovingham Inn, will be a fully independent, owner operated concern, with Richard cooking and Lindsey overseeing the front of house.

The Malt Shovel is being transformed into The Hovingham Inn

The couple said: "There is a clear idea of what we want to offer our customers being that bit different from other operators in the area. "Yorkshire is blessed with some excellent dining pubs and it is very important that we offer our customers a very genuine, distinctive and memorable experience.

"Above all a comfortable and inviting pub that folks can relax in, whether it be just a drink, a quick bite or something more elaborate."

The Johns said their focus will be on modern British classics, with food that is 'generous, satisfying and not overly fussy'.
