A SCHEME to reduce congestion for drivers travelling on the A66 in Darlington gets underway this month.

Highways England is introducing a third lane on the B6280 approach to Morton Palms roundabout to relieve congestion and improve journeys times. The scheme is part of the £220 million Congestion Relief Fund announced in March 2017.

The work starts on February 18 and there will be overnight full carriageway closures (8pm to 6am) until February 25 on the eastbound B6280 between Morrisons roundabout and the A66 Morton Palms roundabout. Traffic will be diverted via McMullen Road and B6279. Two narrow lanes will remain open eastbound during the day.

Highways England work will then take place from 25 March until the end of April with occasional night time closures of the B6280.

Meanwhile, a scheme to improve road markings and signage at the A66 Blands Corner roundabout in Darlington will last from February 25 until April. Overnight road closures of the approaches to the roundabout – A66 East, A167 Croft Road, A167 Grange Road and A67 Carmel Road South – are scheduled.
