VANDALS have attacked trees in a popular Middlesbrough park.

Around 20 specimens were severely damaged or felled in the incident in Thorntree Park.

The damage – thought to have been inflicted with an axe or machete-type weapon within the last week – was reported by a member of the public on Monday.

The attack happened in an area to the rear of Thorntree Park close to the path which runs alongside Spencer Beck. It is an area which is well used by the public for dog walking and access to Skippers Lane and nearby shops.

The damaged trees are young silver birch, oak, ash and cherry.

Councillor Denise Rooney, Middlesbrough Council’s executive member for environment and commercial services, said: “This sort of mindless vandalism simply defies belief and those responsible are beneath contempt.

“Trees are a vital and much cherished part of our public open spaces, and this act of wanton destruction is an attack on civilised values.”
