A PUB owner has been raising money to help a dependant woman whose wheelchair is no longer fit for purpose.

Paul Greig, owner of The Standard pub in Northallerton, got behind his own fundraising campaign which has raised nearly £1,000 for a woman with disability.

Danni Martin, 28, of Geneva Road in Darlington, suffers from the brain disorder Rett Syndrome.

Her disability means she relies on her wheelchair to get out and about, and benefits from weekly sensory sessions in North Yorkshire.

After the sessions, Ms Martin along with her carer Nicola Willis, attend lunch at The Standard.

Ms Willis said: “The pub has raised over £900 for Danni.

“When we visit they make sure she get’s the biggest table so she is comfortable.”

“One day I got a phone call – Paul wanted to speak to me and suggested fundraising for Danni.”

Mr Greig said he had been serving the pair since August 2018, when he noticed the current wheelchair.

He said: “Me and my barman were chatting about Danni and how her wheelchair didn’t look like it was fit for purpose.

“My colleague said, ‘shall we try and raise money to get her a new wheelchair?’

“Our intentions were then to start fundraising for a new one in February.”

Mr Greig raised a total of £926 in under six-weeks.

Wheelchairs can cost more than £1,000 and additional extras can run into hundreds of pounds per item.

Ms Martin’s carer said the wheelchair, in its current state, was not suited for all-weather conditions which restricted when they could go out.

Ms Martin’s mother, Eve Martin, said she decided the donations would pay for the adaptations instead as the wheelchair itself was fairly recent.

She said: “If it is raining, we can’t go out – the money will also pay for a hood, and the new harness.

“It has given us renewed faith in the human race – that there are people that still want to do some good.”

Resulting from the donations, the pub owner is at the stage where he is ready to make the payment to Ms Martin’s parents so they can place the order for the parts.

He said: “They have to order the parts that they require from Italy, but you’ve got to pay upfront for the bits.”

The £926 raised will pay for a harness, side pummels, foot muff, sun visor and a basket.
