DRAMATIC drone footage has shown the devastating effects of a fire that ripped through a Northallerton garage.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service were loaned the drone by the County Durham and Darlington service and they are using it in the investigations at the fire-hit Northallerton Tyre and Battery Company site.

The Brompton Road premises, which was used as a vehicle servicing workshop, was ravaged by fire on Wednesday night and due to risks associated with a commercial fire site, officers were unable to get in and investigate immediately.

Instead they used the drone to hover above the building and capture images which could be useful to their initial investigations.

The drone also helped the fire officers to identify any gas cylinders remaining on the site which could have posed a serious risk of explosion even after the fire was put out.

A spokesman for the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We'll be on the site this morning for fire investigation.

"Thanks again to residents and businesses of Northallerton for your patience whilst we dealt with the incident."

At its height, the fire took nine crews around three hours to extinguish and road closures remained in place around the immediate area throughout yesterday.

Luckily nobody was injured in the blaze.
