A COMMUNITY centre is set for a major refurbishment after a village received a grant worth thousands of pounds.

Middleton St George community centre has received £55,000 from the Impetus Environmental Trust for major external and internal improvements.

The work on the community centre will include a new roof, new external and internal doors, and a new carpet throughout the building.

The meeting room will also be plastered and painted, and there will be a range of improvements in other areas around the building.

The committee were tasked with raising ten per cent of the funds before the start of December, and they held fundraising events, asked for support from nearby companies, and one volunteer set up their own fundraising page to help reach the all-important target.

Among those who helped the cause were St George’s School, who took part in a non-uniform day with the pupils wearing football shirts at the start of the World Cup.

The Barn Nursery, which is based within the community centre, completed a sponsored toddle walk, and a number of fundraising events were held in the village, which included a Halloween Family Quiz Night, 80s Night, as well as Middleton St George’s Magic and Sparkle Christmas Village Event.

A spokesperson for Middleton St George Community Association said: “The committee are so proud to be working and improving our village community centre which is growing from strength to strength with many facilities happening daily.

“The six trustees and other committee members are overwhelmed by the kindness and love from all of the people who have given money to help ensure that the work on the community centre will get done.

“We have worked so hard as we all feel very passionate about the Community Centre as it is the hub of the village with so much happening and much more to come now we have this grant.

“The committee would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has made this possible.”
