FIVE decades of music performed by talented young musicians in the region will be celebrated with an anniversary show in one of the world’ most famous venues.

The Tees Valley Youth Orchestra will reach its 50th anniversary next year, with the 120-strong group honouring the achievement in style by performing across the pond in Carnegie Hall, New York.

The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the next generation of musicians will see them play under the baton of Nichola Nowicki next year.

The orchestra is run by the Tees Valley Music Service and made up of students from across the North-East who rehearse each week and who perform nationally and internationally.

Recent concerts include events at the Sage Gateshead, Birmingham’s Symphony Hall, and tours to Granada, Hungary and Italy.

A major fundraising campaign is currently under way with a target of £130,000 so as to ensure the youngsters can take advantage of the opportunity to play Carnegie Hall.

Businesses are being approached to see if they can help, and the Friends of Tees Valley Youth Orchestra, together with students and their families, have been fundraising too.

Megan Robinson, who plays the flute, said: “To be part of an orchestra that is good enough to play in such a world-class venue has raised my aspirations for a future career in music.

“Carnegie Hall will be an amazing experience which I will never forget throughout my life as a performer. Truly once in a lifetime.”

The Orchestra’s 50th anniversary celebrations also include a Christmas Concert on Saturday at 7pm in Stockton Parish Church.
