CYCLING enthusiasts from a Dales village have completed a double coast to coast ride – raising more than £10,000 for charity.

The team, consisting of Lee Donaldson, Dave Moore, Chris Taplin, Dan Liddy and Andrew Hawkins, call themselves the Lumps and Bumps Team after coming together in 2016 for a fundraising challenge in support of a friend with cancer.

They raised over £12,000 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Low Mill Outdoor Centre in Askrigg and Macmillan Cancer Support who provided vital care to a close friend of the team from West Burton.

Inspired by the level of support from the local communities and from further afield, the team decided to take on a new challenge in 2018 and formulated their ambitious coast to coast plan.

The team have now raised a further £10,000 to benefit charities including Tynesight, which supports Newcastle RVI, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and The Low Mill Bursary Fund which gives disadvantaged young people the chance to experience the Yorkshire Dales whilst taking part in outdoor activities.

The challenge involved the team cycling 245 miles in 22 hours from West Burton to Morecambe then to Saltburn before returning home for a finishing line party which was attended by over 200 people.

Chris Taplin, one of the riders, said: “We knew this was going to be a tough challenge but we trained hard and got the essentials right for endurance cycling.

“The support from our sponsors and the local community was incredible. Everyone really got behind this and it was quite emotional when we cycled back into West Burton.”

Another team member Dave Moore added: “Some people are already asking what we are going to do for our next challenge in 2020.

"If you’d have asked us on the night we would have gladly sold them our bikes, but now a few ideas are being discussed so we might well return for a third event.”

The team was sponsored by the Wensleydale Creamery, O’Reilly Accountants and Cleaner Windows and held a family fun day Finishing Line Party at the Fox and Hounds Pub when they returned to West Burton on Saturday, September 15.
