A LOCAL dance star received the surprise of a lifetime when he was invited on stage by his idol, Kylie Minogue.

Dancer Darrien Wright, from Darlington, attended the recording of Michael McIntyre's Big Show in London with his close friend.

Little did he know, however, the tickets had been set up between his friend and the producers to give him a chance to fulfill his lifelong dream.

The episode, which aired on BBC One Saturday November 24, featured a moment where Michael McIntyre entered the crowd and began talking to Mr Wright about his love for Kylie.

Mr McIntyre then played a secretly-filmed clip of the 33-year-old dancing and singing to 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' in a Newcastle karaoke bar - complete with the exact routine from the song's music video.

After admitting having four Kylie-inspired tattoos, the Australian singer invited Mr Wright on stage for a hug and to finish performing the routine.

Mr Wright, who was thrown into the limelight when he won the second season of BBC's Strictly Dance Fever in 2006, was nominated to be on the show by a friend for his work in the dance community.

A member of the Darlington Operatic Society, Mr Wright helps to organise the town's annual Dance Festival and runs his own school where he preaches the message of following your dreams to his students.

He said: "I'm a big believer in chasing your dreams. I tell my children it all the time.

"My ultimate dream was to be on stage with Kylie Minogue. It's still all a bit of a dream."

The clip of Mr Wright's moment was posted on BBC One's Facebook page and received over 400,000 views within days.

Since the episode was aired he has received an influx of messages from those around him.

He added: "It's just crazy. People from school were messaging me just saying, ‘I can’t believe you said one day you would be on stage with Kylie Minogue and you’ve done it’.

“It lasted for about ten seconds but it was the best ten seconds of my career."

Mr Wright has been living and breathing dance from the age of six when his mum took him to a Kylie Minogue concert.

On a wall in Mr Wright's studio hangs a large, signed photograph of Kylie and the dancer makes sure to incorporate her music into as many of his pupil's routines as possible.

In a school yearbook, Mr White is quoted having the dream to dance on stage with Kylie.

He said: "It's been fantastic. I can’t thank my friend Jane enough for setting me up and nominating me.”
