ROYAL Northern Sinfonia brings Christmas by Candlelight back to churches in the region during December and includes Stockton Parish Church on the tour for the first time.

The orchestra will perform a festive programme in candlelit surroundings. Dates and venues include St Cuthbert’s Chapel in Ushaw, Durham, on December 6, St Cuthbert’s Church in Darlington on December 7, Stockton Parish Church on December 8, Hexham Abbey on December 11 and Sunderland Minster on December 12.

Concerts start at 7.30pm and will include Vivaldi’s Winter from The Four Seasons.

The Darlington and Stockton concerts will be directed by Kyra Humphreys with Steve Hudson on oboe and Richard Martin playing trumpet.

Other works include Tartini Trumpet Concerto in D major, Dvorak Nocturne in B major Op.40, Vivaldi Il Riposo per il S S Natale, Suk Meditation on the Old Czech Chorale Saint Wenceslas Op.53a, Cimarosa Oboe Concerto in C minor, and Suk Serenade for strings in E flat major.

Back at Sage Gateshead, Royal Northern Sinfonia is rehearsing for its home series of Christmas concerts: Handel’s Messiah on December 15, A West End Christmas on December 20, The Snowman from December 22 to 24 and New Year’s Day in Vienna on January 1.

Tickets for Christmas by Candlelight are £15 for adults and £5 for under-18s and can be booked via Sage Gateshead’s website. Tickets can be collected from the venues on the evening. For more information visit classicalseason.com.
