A CAFE geared up to creating a supportive and understanding environment for those living with dementia has opened in Richmond.

Dementia Forward is a charity passionate about supporting people living with dementia and those who care for them, and already has dementia friendly cafes in Ripon and Harrogate.

The new cafe in Richmond, open every Tuesday from 1pm until 3pm in the Town Hall, is designed to provide a relaxed atmosphere, and all the staff and volunteers have experience with dementia – either by having it themselves or through supporting someone with it.

Volunteer Doug Waugh said: “The cafe serves tea, coffee and cake for £3, and soup and a roll for an extra £1. After eating the customers can play games including dominoes, quoits and marbles.

“There is nothing special about what we provide, other than having an understanding of dementia and what makes people more comfortable.”

Admiral dementia nurse Cath Peach will be at the cafe each week.
