PLANS to redevelop a former gym which has become a seafront “eye sore” have been recommended for approval despite objections from neighbours.

An application to renovate and redevelop the derelict Olympia Fitness Centre on Turner Street, Redcar, was submitted by developers Steven Green and Gemma Sharples in July this year.

If approved, the plans would see the former gym transformed into a complex of shops, flats, office space and conference facilities.

The proposals have been backed by to Redcar and Cleveland Council’s planning officers ahead of a decision being made by the authority’s Regulatory Committee.

However, committee members will need to consider eight separate letters of objection submitted by, and on behalf of, residents living at the adjacent Regency Mansions.

The report recommends the approval of the development.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council’s Regulatory Committee meets tomorrow at 10am to reach a decision on the application.
