TWELVE exhibition boards have been acquired for Darlington's Victorian market hall as space for local artists, students and schoolchildren to display their work.

A creative programme is under way with the market looking to incorporate and celebrate town centre heritage, railways, local artists, people and current or topical subjects. The aim is to offer visitors to the town a new and exciting cultural space.

The market management bought the boards after applying to Darlington for Culture for a small arts grant. The exhibition space is for artists, colleges, schools, local groups and art societies.

“There are many talented individuals and groups creating original and exciting exhibitions in Darlington and a real appetite for chances to share and enjoy great art, craft and creative practice," said Stephen Wiper, of Creative Darlington.

"We’re delighted that a new exhibition facility is being developed within Darlington Markets and to see a new space to enjoy work emerge in the town centre.”

Groups and artists are invited to submit details. A new creative network group meets each month and is proving popular.

"We have welcomed a variety of artists from all media forms," said Alex Nicholson, assistant market manager.

Dates of meetings are on the market Facebook page and indoor market noticeboards.
