RIPON Workhouse Garden was awarded a top Outstanding award in the recent Yorkshire in Bloom Awards 2018.

The Workhouse Garden has been greatly restored since 2008.

A Community project headed by Nick Thompson, the gardens welcome numerous community groups and volunteers of all ages and abilities.

Catherine Baxter, who manages the garden on a daily basis, said she was grateful to all the groups that support it, including Ripon’s Rotary and Lions clubs.

The site is a haven for wildlife and conservation with the whole area being returned to its Victorian splendour including the wildflower area and the newly herbaceous border with Victorian plants and flowers.

The judges for Yorkshire in Bloom said that ongoing plans are to be commended, including the restoration of the vegetable beds and the wildflower area to return the whole site to its original form.

The gardens also earn funding by supplying Lockwoods Restaurant in Ripon with produce.

The original kitchen garden was part of the Workhouse with its produce feeding the inmates.
