FOR this week's archive section, we plunge our hand bravely into the packet marked "Spennymoor" in The Northern Echo's photo-library.

As well as looking for good old pictures of this County Durham town – population at the 2011 census: 19,816 – we also had an eye open for a photo that might keep our old car spotters satisfied – at least momentarily.

If you have any information or thoughts to add about any of today's images, including the old car pic, please email chris.lloyd@nne.co.uk

The Northern Echo:

EXEMPLARY TOWN: "An example to other councils in this area is this bus station and car park behind Spennymoor Town Hall which is now ready for use," said the Echo on November 13, 1965. "It is in the centre of town and at the hub of the new town centre now in course of erection."

The Northern Echo:

TO THE DOGS: Spennymoor greyhound stadium in September 1962. The stadium opened in 1950 on a brickworks off Merrington Lane – it looks like you can still see a pitheap in the background – and it remained operational until 1998. Now houses and an industrial estate occupy the site, although there is still a pub called The Winning Post.

DIY CHOICE: The inside of the Co-op decorating department in Spennymoor in April 1970. Rather garish wallpaper costs up to 17s 8d a roll. All the paint on the top shelves is the Co-op's own range, while Crown, Dulux, Magicote and Jellipex are tucked away on the lower shelves.
