THE country’s top sheepdogs and their handlers are competing in Wensleydale over three days this weekend.

The English National Sheepdog Trials, organised by the Northern Sheepdog Association, have attracted 150 competitors to Jervaulx Abbey from today (27) until Sunday.

Spectators will watch the trialists guide their dogs around the course, herding five sheep through a series of gates and into the shedding ring, where two sheep will be separated off, followed by the ‘pen.’

The brace contest will involve one handler manoeuvre two dogs and a packet of 10 sheep around the challenging course.

The event also features an open quoits championship, trade stands, craft marquee, and exhibition of local sheep breeds.

Local Young Farmers will host children’s activities and there will be a funfair and games.

Refreshments will be available and the Black Sheep Brewery is running a bar and Kielder Organic Meats a catering marquee.

Entry fee for trial spectators is £5 with children under 16 free. The site is open from 8am until early evening.
