A SURVIVOR of the Piper Alpha disaster will give a personal account of his experiences when he launches a new book.

‘Baptism of Fire - Life, Death and Piper Alpha’ is Geoff Bollands’ story of the tragedy almost 30 years ago that claimed 167 lives.

The Teessider was the night shift control room operator when the North sea oil and gas platform exploded with fatal consequences.

Mr Bollands fortunately only received minor injuries and was among those rescued from the platform.

Now 70, he re-trained as an independent financial advisor, later setting up a successful business in Acklam, Middlesbrough, which employs 18 people.

Tonight, at Middlesbrough reference library he will introduce the book to guests and talk about his life and work on the ill fated oil rig.

Mr Bollands said: “It was and still is the worst disaster in the offshore oil industry.

“This is a unique personal survival account and the only perspective written from inside the control room.

“My story is one of hope and inspiration which illustrates that, whatever traumatic circumstances we might experience, life does go on and positive lessons can still be learned.

“It is possible to have a quality of life which seems unimaginable in the early days, months and even years following a major trauma like this.”

The event begins at 7pm and is free to attend.

Places however must be reserved by calling telephone number (01642) 729002.

Donations will be taken on behalf of Teesside Hospice during the event.

Copies of the new book, which is published by Troubador, will be available to buy and are priced at £11.99 each.
