RUGBY players will meet their fans at a family fun day being organised in aid of a cancer-stricken youngster this weekend.

On Sunday, Mowden Rugby Club will hold a fundraising event in the hope of supporting little Luke Bell and his family.

The eight-year-old Darlington boy is currently undergoing gruelling treatment after relapsing with high risk neuroblastoma – a rare form of cancer – in April.

Reeling from the news that their son’s cancer has spread, his devoted family are now attempting to raise as much money as possible to support him and fund any future treatment that may not be available on the NHS.

Having undergone higher dose chemotherapy earlier this month, Luke will soon begin another cycle and has been accepted onto a trial offering treatment in London and Southampton.

The community has rallied around to support the brave Holy Family Primary pupil, with fundraising events having already taken place and more planned.

The event on Sunday will take place at the Northern Echo Arena from 1pm until 5pm and will feature a variety of family-friendly activities.

There will be a charity auction and the team’s new kit will be launched, with those visiting also invited to don fancy dress and enjoy refreshments.

Luke’s father, rugby player Mark Bell, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received so far and the fundraising offers keep coming in.”

He urged people to join the #TeamLuke fundraising effort by contacting the family with ideas through email at teamlukebell@outlook.com.
