A FORMER meat factory site has been sold to a livestock auctioneering firm.

Cleveland Meat Company’s old base, on Stockton’s Yarm Road, is now in the hands of Darlington Farmers Auction Mart Company Limited.

The 3.7-acre site includes an abattoir, processing and cold store facility and a number of larger agricultural buildings used for cattle storage.

Property consultancy Sanderson Weatherall oversaw the sale.

Agent George Williams, who is based in the company’s Teesside office, said: “We are used to working with a wide variety of properties.

“However, dealing with the sale of an abattoir was a fairly rare occurrence and it made for a really interesting process.

“The site’s quality, size and prime location meant we received a lot of enquiries.”

Cleveland Meat Company Limited ceased trading last year after falling into administration.

The company, which employed nearly 70 staff, was formed in 1973 and known for supplying meat to wholesalers across the UK and Europe, including London’s Smithfield Market and customers in France, Germany, Holland, Greece and Italy.
