BEEF Shorthorn bulls smashed two records at the society’s official spring sale in Stirling and two Thirsk breeders also had success.

A new breed top price of 26,000gns was set by Glenisla Jackpot, a roan 23 month-old by the Australian bred Broughton Park Thunder and out of the homebred Glenisla Desire from Major John and Catriona Gibb, Blairgowrie, Perthshire.

Jackpot, in the breed’s top five per cent, sold to James Porter, Lisburn, Co Antrim.

Earlier Mr Porter saw his two year-old roan, Uppermill Supreme, awarded senior and overall reserve titles and sell for 6,000gns to G Hunt, Thirsk.

Jason of Upsall, a 23-month old roan by the 4,000gns Glenisla Zetor from Gerald Turton, Thirsk, sold for 14,000gns to Geoff Riby, Bridlington.

A new breed average of £5,914 was achieved – up £1,566 on the year, for 65 entries sold. The 87 per cent clearance, included a record eight entries selling for five figures. Females achieved 100 per cent clearance with 33 averaging £3,016 – up £1,100 on 2016.

Female trade was led at 6,600gns by Castlemount Matrix Foxglove Flake, a roan 21 month-old from Duncan McDowell, Newtownards. She sold to Ross Withers, Truro.
