PUPILS at a leading North Yorkshire school are sporting a stylish new look with the introduction of new school uniform.

Tailored tweed jackets, teamed with blue shirts and tartan kilts are being introduced for girls at Queen Mary’s School at Baldersby Park, near Thirsk.

Head Mrs Carole Cameron said: “A uniform is extremely important as it instantly gives an impression of the school and fosters a sense of belonging and community which is very much part of our ethos.

“It has been some while since the uniform was updated and the inclusion of the jacket for Year 5 girls and above works well with the kilt which has been synonymous with Queen Mary’s for many years.”

The jacket is based on a traditional hacking jacket which fits well with the school’s equine tradition, and the cloth has been woven at a Yorkshire mill.

Mrs Cameron added: “The feeling was that we needed to reflect today’s world and so, after talking with parents, pupils and staff, we now have a uniform which is smart and comfortable.”
