A CLASSIC musical is set to return to a fully refurbished art deco theatre thanks to the generosity and support of one student.

Lindsey Sykes, a Darlington College student, has rallied the town’s businesses and arts fans to raise £1,200 in sponsorship for a student production of We Will Rock You.

The newly restored Majestic Theatre will play a fitting host to the first year performance which is set to celebrate the grand re-opening of the Bondgate venue.

Mrs Sykes, originally from Catterick, sent out around 300 emails and letters to help raise money for the production to supply the cast with costumes and props, as well as lighting and sound equipment.

Production arts student, Mrs Sykes, said: “We wanted to treat the production as professionally as possible and in any real world, the producers would have to find the sponsorship or money to pay for everything.

“I am very excited to be taking on this project and I hope the college will be open to doing more of this sort of thing where we get to treat a production as if it is in the real profession itself.

“We Will Rock You is one of my favourite shows and from what I have seen, it’s going to be brilliant.”

Tickets are already on sale for the show’s premiere on Monday, June 13.

Theatre manager, Matt Campbell, said: “This is a big thing for us as usually first year students don’t get to do this sort of thing and this is such a big opportunity for them.”
