A CALF from Northumberland won the 10th annual Christmas calf show held by the Hereford Cattle Breeders' Association at Shrewsbury mart.

Moralee 1 Porterhouse from T & D Harrison, Stocksfield, is a 14 month-old powerfully built young bull out of Moralee 1 Kimberley, and by Danish bred bull SMH King Size 87K.

Tom and Di Harrison's long journey through the snow also paid off at the following annual Designer Genes Sale.

Moralee 1 Kate 2nd – the only female they offered for sale from their famous Moralee herd – sold for 6,200gns (£6,510).

The junior female champion at this year's Royal Highland and Great Yorkshire shows, Kate 2nd is sired by Romany 1 Frisky, and was sold in-calf to the renowned Knightrider bull.

The Auckvale herd of W & R Kemp & Sons of Bishop Auckland also offered a heifer at the sale.

Auckvale Lively is a direct daughter of two-time Horned Female of the Year Auckvale Lively and the first daughter of Auckvale King-Maker to be offered for sale.

She was only the second Auckvale female to ever sell at public auction and sold to Burs Farm Partners, Norfolk, for 3,800gns (£3,990).

A total of 19 lots averaged £5,062 and grossed £96,185, making it the highest averaging Hereford sale in UK history. The sale also twice broke the record for the highest priced Hereford female ever to sell at auction in the UK at 11,000gns and 10,200gns.
