A 26-YEAR-OLD intensive pig farmer is celebrating after winning a national accolade in the farming world.

Matthew Donald, from West Rounton, near Northallerton, was named Young Pig Farmer of the Year at The National Pig Awards 2017.

He has been integral in his family’s pig and poultry business for seven years and became a director four years ago.

His research has steered investment in new farrowing, weaning, finishing and gilt accommodation in the 280-sow pig unit.

Mr Donald said: “The judges said I had a good overall view of the pig industry and our family farm was praised.

“I didn’t go expecting to win as reaching the final was a great achievement but now I have it feels great to get some recognition.”
