LOCAL author Paul Menzies was in Guisborough Bookshop recently signing copies of his latest book, Middlesbrough – Then and Now.

Paul says Middlesbrough has a rich heritage, which is uniquely reflected in his new compilation. Contrasting a selection of 90 archive images alongside full-colour modern photographs, the book captures how the town used to be and how it looks today.

Accompanied by informative captions, each page captures life in the area as it once was – and is now.

Featuring streets and buildings, shops and businesses and the people of Middlesbrough, all aspects of life are covered, providing a fascinating insight into the changing face of the town.

Middlesbrough – Then and Now will provide present occupants with a glimpse of how the town used to look, in addition to awakening nostalgic memories.

The book is available from Guisborough Bookshop or other retailers at £12.99.

Paul says that his next book will highlight the centenary of the First World War and its impact on Middlesbrough and the surrounding area.

He wants to write about the whole of the war, adopting a scrapbook approach.

He is keen for anybody with Great War memorabilia or information to contact him, especially with photographs, diaries, letters, war records etc.

Paul can be contacted on 01642-888951 or at m.menzies1@ntlworld.com.

Paul is a retired deputy headteacher and has been writing about the North of England since 1988.

He is the author of several local history books and has been an historical consultant for the BBC and ITV.

  • While in the bookshop, a man asked Paul to sign his book. He turned out to be a Finnish student, Elias Djupsjo, who has a particular interest in the history of Middlesbrough.
